Book excerpt: Jean Racine (1639-99) remains to this day the greatest of French poetic dramatists. Britannicus (1669), the first play in this volume, takes its themes from Roman history: the setting is bloody and treacherous court of the Emperor Nero. Phaedra (1677) dramatizes the Greek myth of Phaedra'sdoomed love for her stepson Hippolytus. Athaliah (1691), Racine's last and perhaps finest play, draws on the Old Testament story of Athaliah, Queen of Judah and worshipper of Baal, who is threatened and finally forced to concede victory to Joash, a son of the house of David and survivor ofAthaliah's massacres.Racine's tragedies portray characters wrestling with ambition, treachery, religion, and love. In this translation, specially commissioned for The World's Classics series, C.H. Sisson has captured admirably the lucidity of Racine's language, both analytic and passionate, and the rhythm of hisfour-part Alexandrine, a combination that previous translators have consistently failed to achieve.

Book excerpt: Impetuous Nero has lost all restraint: bored with being loved, he wants to be feared. Agrippina, widow of Emperor Claudius, has paved the way for her son Nero to succeed to the throne ahead of his step-brother Britannicus. But as his taste for power grows, Nero begins to slip from his mother's control. Britannicus's life is threatened and Rome moves ever closer to the edge. Jean Racine's classic play Britannicus is a chilling study of the emergence of a monster. Timberlake Wertenbaker's translation premiered at Wilton's Music Hall, London, in October 2011.

Download or read book Vitruvius Britannicus written by Colen Campbell and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A consortium of British architects and their patrons rebelled against the early eighteenth century's Baroque excesses and turned instead toward the Renaissance works of Andrea Palladio for inspiration. These Neo-Palladians guided the course of British architecture toward classical principles, and the Vitruvius Britannicus (British Vitruvius) reflects their vision. A sumptuous collection of magnificent copperplate engravings, it depicts great English country houses and public buildings. Published between 1715 and 1725 in a three-folio set, the Vitruvius Britannicus documents in meticulous detail many of the buildings from the previous two centuries. Its 300 illustrations include facades, ground plans, exterior elevations, and perspective views. Featured buildings include those designed by Inigo Jones, the seventeenth-century architect who introduced Palladianism to England; the work of Sir John Vanbrugh, whose innovative Classical-Revival architecture retained a Baroque flair; and contemporary designs, including those of the author, Scottish architect Colen Campbell. The popularity of this volume fostered the development of the Neo-Palladian movement, and Vitruvius Britannicus continues to influence architects and designers. Handsome and modestly priced, this new edition is an essential complement to any design library.

Book excerpt: HOMO BRITANNICUS tells the epic history of life in Britain, from man’s very first footsteps to the present day. Drawing on all the latest evidence and techniques of investigation, Chris Stringer describes times when Britain was so tropical that man lived alongside hippos and sabre tooth tiger, times so cold we shared this land with reindeer and mammoth, and times colder still when we were forced to flee altogether. This is the first time we have known the full extent of this history: the Ancient Human Occupation of Britain project, led by Chris, has made discoveries that have stunned the world, pushing back the earliest date of arrival to 700,000 years ago. Our ancestors have been fighting a dramatic battle for survival here ever since.

Download or read book Casimir Britannicus written by Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (1595-1640) was known in his lifetime as the Christian Horace. He was one of the most famous Neo-Latin poets of the Baroque, widely read, commented and translated throughout Europe. He was nominated Poet Laureate by Pope Urban VIII. Sarbiewski was also famous for his studies in rhetoric and critical works such as De perfecta poesi sive Vergilius et Homerus. His Latin poetry was read, translated and imitated also in England, especially from 1640 until the first half of the 19th century. The first edition of Sarbiewski's English translations, by George Hills, was published in 1646. From that time onwards, Sarbiewski was translated by a variety of poets ranging from Hills to such famous authors as Vaughan, Burns and Coleridge. His poetry was universally read in grammar schools and used as a medium of improving the knowledge of Latin during a period exceeding two centuries. Thanks to Sarbiewski, English poets started to imitate Horace, which was an important factor in overcoming the Pindaric tradition. Sarbiewski's oeuvre was also attractive owing to its immersion in various cultural traditions such as Stoicism, Ignatian spirituality, Platonism, and Hermeticism. This revised edition includes all known English translations of Sarbiewski's poems. The texts are accompanied by an introduction presenting the biography and works of Sarbiewski, as well as a short critical analysis of the translations included in the volume.
