Download or read book Seth written by Eric Hoffman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian cartoonist Gregory Gallant, pen name Seth, emerged as a cartoonist in the fertile period of the 1980s, when the alternative comics market boomed. Though he was influenced by mainstream comics in his teen years and did his earliest comics work on Mister X, a mainstream-style melodrama, Seth remains one of the least mainstream-inflected figures of the alternative comics' movement. His primary influences are underground comix, newspaper strips, and classic cartooning. These interviews, including one career-spanning, definitive interview between the volume editors and the artist published here for the first time, delve into Seth's output from its earliest days to the present. Conversations offer insight into his influences, ideologies of comics and art, thematic preoccupations, and major works, from numerous perspectives—given Seth's complex and multifaceted artistic endeavors. Seth's first graphic novel, It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken, announced his fascination with the past and with earlier cartooning styles. Subsequent works expand on those preoccupations and themes. Clyde Fans, for example, balances present-day action against narratives set in the past. The visual style looks polished and contemplative, the narrative deliberately paced; plot seems less important than mood or characterization, as Seth deals with the inescapable grind of time and what it devours, themes which recur to varying degrees in George Sprott, Wimbledon Green, and The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists.
Download or read book Eighteen Years Seth written by Brad Heyen and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all look at people and think we know them, but it sure would help us truly understand them if we could go back and see their life at different points of times so we can see what they have been through: their joys, their struggles, what made them who they are. In Eighteen Years: Seth, you will be immersed into the life of a foster kid named Seth. The story is arranged so you, as a reader, can jump to different times of Seth’s life so you can build upon your knowledge of what Seth has been through as well as glimpses into the paths Seth still has to endure. You will know what Seth has been through in his life and how it shaped who he was, and who he is. You will be on an emotional roller coaster as you live Seth’s life as a foster kid. You will experience the hopelessness and drain of not having his own family, his real mom; followed by friendships and caregivers that give him hope. You will see the beauty of people in Seth’s life that give him love and support, but then you will see the reality of abuse and extreme loneliness as well. All lives are tough, but wait until you learn about Seth’s and what he overcomes and what he becomes! We all have a story—a complex story. I hope that as you read Seth’s story, you will look at each character and ask yourself, “I wonder what has made them who they are.” It is an exercise I believe we all should learn to do in real life. There is so much that makes each of us who we are. The people and their own stories, our environment and circumstances, and the influences are endless. Get to know people, invest in their stories, and understand their stories. Hopefully, that may change your story!

Book excerpt: New in paperback. Originally published as SOUL FRIENDS. Best-selling author Stephen Cope explores the essence of human connection through five essential types of relationships. "Destined to be a classic. . . . . Cope makes us want to risk making real, intentional human connections-and makes us long to celebrate them, and to allow them to transform us into fully-conscious and fully-alive human beings." - Geneen Roth, New York Times best-selling author of Women, Food and God and Lost and Found Do you long to connect more deeply with other human beings? Do you wonder if you're living up to your human potential to make these deep connections happen-and perhaps missing out on this most compelling aspect of a vital life? In this groundbreaking new book, best-selling author Stephen Cope invites us to explore the most important questions in this domain: What is the nature of human connection? Why, precisely, is a capacity to connect deeply so important to the development of our minds, bodies, and spirits? What are the actual mechanisms of connection that we must master during the course of life? How can our lack of connection inhibit our happiness and satisfaction in life? Can we learn to connect more wisely than we do? Cope is well known as a master storyteller, and in this new book he seamlessly blends science, scholarship, and storytelling, drawing on poignant stories from his own life as well as the lives of famous figures-from E. M. Forster to Sigmund Freud to Queen Victoria-whose formative relationships shed light on the nature of connection itself. In the process, he lays out in stunning detail the precise mechanisms of human connection, which he distills into five helpful categories: containment, twinship, adversity, mirroring, and conscious partnership. Then he invites us into a remarkably practical reflection on how these forms of connection appear in our own lives, helping us work toward a fuller understanding of deep human connection-and a more satisfying and fruitful life.

Book excerpt: Genesis is the book of beginnings; and creation begins with light. Most religious people live with shuttered windows, receiving light only from their own people and their own tradition. Genesis 1–11 calls us to recognize all peoples as created by God and under the rainbow covenant of his light. This commentary opens windows on seeds of truth from Genesis 1-11 which are planted in the various environments “in front of the text” – including the New Testament, rabbinic tradition, the Qur’an, and Bangladeshi culture. It examines those seeds in their original seedbed, discerning how their truths will unfurl from the fragrant Genesis 1-11 bud of theology through the blessings given to Eve, Noah, and Abraham. Windows on the Text is a ground-breaking Bible commentary series written by followers of Jesus in Muslim contexts. It develops biblical insight in deliberate conversation with the Qur’an, the Hadith, and local Islamic cultures. Confi dent that the Bible in its entirety speaks directly into Muslim contexts, it opens new windows into the holy word of God to equip and empower believers to live out their faith in loving service and clear communication within their communities.
