Book excerpt: The image of Santa Barbara of the Thunder is being shipped to the city of Bahia to be enshrined at the Museum of Sacred Art. As the boat that will deliver her is docking, she comes to life to save Manela, a young Bahian girl whose flirtatious behaviour has offended her pious family. This magical occurrence announces the start of the festival. The sounds of berimbau drums herald the candombl rituals that will determine the success or failure of Santa Barbara's magic. Once again the author of DONA FLOR AND HER TWO HUSBANDS shows his consummate ability to tell a story with compassion and sensuality.

This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siew seeks to examine the events that will unfold within the three and a half years before the dawn of the kingdom of God on earth. He argues that John composed the textual unit of Rev 11:1--14:5 as a coherent and unified literary unit structured in a macro-chiasm. He pays special attention to the fusion of form and content and seeks to elucidate how the concentric and chiastic pattern informs the meaning of the literary units within 11:1--14:5, and proposes that the text of 11:1--14:5 is best analyzed using Hebraic literary conventions, devices, and compositional techniques such as chiasm, parallelism, parataxis, and structural parallelism. The macro-chiastic pattern provides the literary-structural framework for John to portray that the events of the last three and a half years unfold on earth as a result of what transpires in heaven. Specifically, the war in heaven between Michael and the dragon has earthly ramifications. The outcome of the heavenly war where Satan is defeated and thrown out of heaven to earth results in the war on earth between the two beasts of Rev 13 and the two witnesses of Rev 11. The narrative of the war in heaven (12:7-12) is seen as the pivot of the macro-chiastic structure. Siew pays close attention to the time-period of the three-and-a-half years as a temporal and structural marker which functions to unite the various units in 11:1--14:5 into a coherent and integral whole. The events of the last days will be centred in Jerusalem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hour of Revival is a time of crisis and few go through it without deception by the enemy. Bluntly, the Revival Hour is the occasion for evil spirits to fool the most spiritual believers into becoming deceived & possessed by evil spirits in their outer being through unwittingly accepting Satan's counterfeits. The aftermath of the Revival in Wales, which was a true work of God, revealed many 'honest souls' swept off their feet by evil supernatural powers, which weren't discerned as not being the true working of God. This is a glimpse into the mixed 'manifestations' which have come upon the Church, as almost without exception, in every land where revival has broken forth, within a very brief period of time the counterfeit stream has mingled with the true; and almost without exception, true and false have been accepted together. Evil spirit possession has followed, and checked every similar revival throughout the centuries since Pentecost and these things must now be understood, and dealt with, if the Church is to advance to maturity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians view the mark of the beast as something futuristic. The receiving of the mark of the beast commands the wrath and indignation of God; and the consequences are severe. Many Christians has already accepted the mark of the beast; unbeknownst to them. They do not have a clear vision as to whom or what is the beast. Each denomination has their interpretation of the beast and how and when it will manifest. The word says, And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. Revelation 14: 9, 10. Many Christian denominations believe the prophecy points to the papacy as the beast. However, in scripture, the Papal system has never been a beast, is not a beast and will never be a beast. To call that system the beast is to take the word of God on a very long stretch. This horn functions both politically and as a Christian Church. It persecuted and killed any Christian who disagrees with its dogmas. The word says the Saints shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time and he would come to his end unto the end. Nowhere in scripture is it indicated that this horn power will regain its dominion to persecute the saints of God as it did for over twelve hundred years. Then who is the beast? This book has the answer. Reviewed by Online Book Club: Official Review: The Mark of the Beast Revelation 13

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War on the Saints is Jessie Penn-Lewis's masterwork, wherein she outlines the occurrences of Satan within the Christian world, and the eternal battle between good and evil. The book aims to prepare and assist Christians who are caught unguarded against the onslaught of evil and deception which has ensued for thousands of years. In so doing, the reader will - assuming they heed the advice upon these pages - be better equipped versus the various obstacles, trickery and evils that Satan and his ilk will hurl in the path of the righteous. Penn-Lewis firmly believed that the devil was a master manipulator, with a keen knowledge of when and who to target in his schemes. Several of the chapters within this book detail the different techniques employed by Satan, and how to guard against them. Quotations of Scripture abound, boosting the author's authority and lending much credence to her arguments. Notably, War on the Saints was one of the first texts of modern Christianity to discuss in detail the process of spiritual warfare. Penn details the idea that Christians could equip their soul to defeat and extinguish evil in others by demonstrating the true virtues of Jesus Christ as the savior of man. Thus, the reader may consider this book something of a battle manual of the spirit. This edition of War on the Saints contains the full text, together with the original table diagrams which are important to understand the points Penn-Lewis makes later in the book. Controversial from the moment it was first published, this book has seen itself abridged by censorious publishers who wish to present a sanitized version of the original text.

Download or read book Utah and the American Civil War written by Kenneth L. Alford and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Fort Sumter was attacked in April 1861, hundreds of soldiers were stationed at the U.S. Army’s Camp Floyd, forty miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The camp, established in June 1858, was the nation’s largest military post. Utah and the American Civil War presents a wealth of primary sources pertaining to the territory’s participation in the Civil War—material that until now has mostly been scattered, incomplete, or difficult to locate. Organized and annotated for easy use, this rich mix of military orders, dispatches, letters, circulars, battle and skirmish reports, telegraph messages, command lists, and other correspondence shows how Utah’s wartime experience was shaped by a peculiar blend of geography, religion, and politics. Editor Kenneth L. Alford opens the collection with a year-by-year summary of important events in Utah Territory during the war, with special attention paid to the army’s recall from Utah in 1861, the Lot Smith Utah Cavalry Company’s 107-day military service, the Union army’s return in 1862, and relations between the military and Mormons. Readers will find accounts of an 1861 attempt to court-martial a Virginia-born commander for treason, battle reports from the January 1863 Bear River Massacre, documents from the army’s high command authorizing Governor James Doty to enlist additional Utah troops in October 1864, and evidence of Colonel Patrick Edward Connor’s personal biases against Native Americans and Mormons. A glossary of nineteenth-century phrases, military terms, and abbreviations, along with a detailed timeline of key historical events, places the records in historical context. Collected and published together for the first time, these records document the unique role Utah played in the Civil War and reveal the war’s influence, both subtle and overt, on the emerging state of Utah.
