Basking in their luxurious home, walking red carpets, and a surprise pregnancy, she and Ashe never dreamed of being so happy. Their joy is short-lived as someone from their past follows them to California, intent on destroying their lives. As one twisted traumatic event leads to another, Izzy is challenged to balance grief and motherhood while managing the Cramer fortunes. Believing her dancing career may only be a cherished memory, she insists on relocating her family back to her refuge—New York City. She knows it’s the only hope of regaining her confidence and establishing a comfortable home for her children. Her anonymity, a thing of the past, becomes her most treasured wish as she is thrust into society’s upper crust. Finding the desire and time to dance again seems impossible until a chance meeting with Hollywood’s most famous leading man. Callen Stone’s swagger and playful approach to life may be just what Izzy needs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The story of Mary Secaur’s demise and the vengeance inflicted upon her suspected assailants by an enraged mob that took the law into its own hands.” —The Daily Standard On a hot and dusty Sunday in June 1872, 13-year-old Mary Secaur set off on her two-mile walk home from church. She never arrived. The horrific death of this young girl inspired an illegal interstate pursuit-and-arrest, courtroom dramatics, conflicting confessions, and the daylight lynching of a traveling tin peddler and an intellectually disabled teenager. Who killed Mary Secaur? Were the accused actually guilty? What drove the citizens of Mercer County to lynch the suspects? David Kimmel seeks answers to these provoking questions and deftly recounts what actually happened in the fateful summer of 1872, imagining the inner workings of the small rural community, reconstructing the personal relationships of those involved, and restoring humanity to this gripping story. Using a unique blend of historical research and contemporary accounts, Outrage in Ohio explores how a terrible crime ripped an Ohio farming community apart and asks us to question what really happened to Mary Secaur. “Kimmel tells of the 1872 rape and horrifying murder of Mary, a 13-year-old girl who lived near Van Wert in Mercer County . . . Kimmel uses intensive research and constructed conversations to produce his look at this crime.” —Akron Beacon Journal

Download or read book Boy with the Bullhorn written by Ron Goldberg and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coming-of-age memoir of life on the frontlines of the AIDS Crisis with ACT UP New York. From the moment Ron Goldberg stumbled into his first ACT UP meeting in June 1987, the AIDS activist organization became his life. For the next eight years, he chaired committees, planned protests, led teach-ins, and facilitated their Monday night meetings. He cruised and celebrated at ACT UP parties, attended far too many AIDS memorials, and participated in over a hundred zaps and demonstrations, becoming the group’s unofficial “Chant Queen,” writing and leading chants for many of their major actions. Boy with the Bullhorn is both a memoir and an immersive history of the original New York chapter of ACT UP, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, from 1987 to 1995, told with great humor, heart, and insight. Using the author's own story, "the activist education of a well-intentioned, if somewhat naïve nice gay Jewish theater queen,” Boy with the Bullhorn intertwines Goldberg’s experiences with the larger chronological history of ACT UP, the grassroots AIDS activist organization that confronted politicians, scientists, drug companies, religious leaders, the media, and an often-uncaring public to successfully change the course of the AIDS epidemic. Diligently sourced and researched, Boy with the Bullhorn provides both an intimate look into how activist strategies are developed and deployed, as well as a snapshot of life in New York City during the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic. On the occasions where Goldberg writes outside his personal experience, he relies on his extensive archive of original ACT UP documents, news articles, and other published material, as well as activist videos and oral histories, to help flesh out actions, events, and the background stories of key activists. Writing with great candor, Goldberg examines the group’s triumphs and failures, as well as the pressures and bad behaviors that eventually tore ACT UP apart. A story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, from engaging in outrageous, media-savvy demonstrations, to navigating the intricacies of drug research and the byzantine bureaucracies of the FDA, NIH, and CDC, Boy with the Bullhorn captures the passion, smarts, and evanescent spirit of ACT UP—the anger, grief, and desperation, but also the joy, camaraderie, and sexy, campy playfulness—and the exhilarating adrenaline rush of activism.

Timeless Service in Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter chronicles the history of the women who sojourned in the life of one chapter of the first Black female Greek letter organization and the events that impacted their journey in Savannah, Georgia, from 1943 to 2012. Emma Jean Hawkins Conyers, former president of the GSO Chapter, begins with the story of Adeline Graham, a white philanthropist who bequeathed funds to the chapter for use in establishing an orphanage for Negro children, and reveals how the chapter responded to the challenge. As she continues the chapter’s history through the years, Conyers shares notable details on members, awards, community projects, and events that helped to preserve a legacy that endures to this day. A novel of suspense, family ties, and twisted passions from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Obsession... The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born. She never returned, and the Longbows don’t talk about her much. The younger ones, who never met her, quietly presume she’s dead. But she isn’t. She is not far away, part of a new family, one she never chose—and her mind has been shattered... When a bartender leaves the resort late one night, and Bo and Cal discover her battered body in the snow, it’s the first sign that danger lurks in the mountains that surround them. The police suspect Cal, but Bo finds herself trusting him—and turning to him as another woman is murdered and the Longbows are stunned by Alice’s sudden reappearance. The twisted story she has to tell about the past—and the threat that follows in her wake—will test the bonds of this strong family, and thrust Bodine into a darkness she could never have imagined.

Book excerpt: The world of law enforcement and criminal justice in the South during the Jim Crow Era was vastly different than it is today, and segregation was especially difficult for black police officers who were challenged to enforce laws. William J. Day was one of the first 10 African American police officers in Savannah, GA. His story is one of courage, fortitude and dedication to his career and his family. In May, 1947, he joined the Savannah police department. In those days of segregation, severe limits were placed on black law enforcement officers. There were segregated drinking fountains in precinct stations. Black policemen were allowed to patrol only in black communities, and had to call in a commander if they arrested a white suspect. White officers would steam-clean the seats of their police cruisers after black officers had driven them. "The black officers were reduced to automatic civilian status when they walked off the job," recalls his son, Charles E. Day, Sr. "My father had to deal with it, plus keep a job and raise a family." William and Laura raised a family of four sons, one of whom was an invalid. Laura had studied nursing, but gave up her career to care for her family. She was always home for her children and the home was always filled with friends and good food. William J. Day, Sr. passed away in April 1972, just shy of his 60th birthday. As his son Charles approached his own 60th birthday, he wanted to memorialize the legacy of his father and pay tribute to a remarkable man. This book is written about this father's life and his family. The Tenth Man: Living in Black and Blue tells the story of this era in Southern history, the city of Savannah, GA, the civil rights movement and the lives of people who endured these hardships.
