Download or read book Una storia semplice written by Leonardo Sciascia and published by Adelphi. This book was released on 1989 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Postmodern Ethics written by Elizabeth Wren-Owens and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postmodern Ethics offers a new perspective on debates surrounding the role of the intellectual in Italian society, and provides an original reading of two important Italian contemporary writers, Leonardo Sciascia and Antonio Tabucchi. It examines the ways in which the two writers use literature to engage with their socio-political environment in a climate informed by the doubts and scepticism of postmodernism, after traditional forms of impegno had been abandoned. Postmodern Ethics explores ways in which Tabucchi and Sciascia further their engagement through embracing the very factors which problematized traditional committed writing, such as the absence of fixed truths, the inability of language to fully communicate ideas and intertextuality. Postmodern Ethics provides an innovative new reading of Tabucchi’s works. It challenges the standard view in critical literature that his writing may be divided into ‘engaged’ texts which dialogue with society and ‘postmodern’ texts which focus on literary interiority, suggesting instead that socio-political engagement underpins all of his works. It also offers a new lens on Sciascia’s writing, unpacking why Sciascia, unlike his contemporaries, is able to maintain a belief in literature as a means of dialoguing with society. Postmodern Ethics explores the ways in which Tabucchi and Sciascia approach issues of terrorism, justice, the anti-mafia movement, immigration and the value of reading in connected yet distinct ways, suggesting that a close genealogy may be drawn between these two key intellectual figures.

Download or read book In limine Storie di una comunit ai margini della laguna written by Sauro Gelichi and published by All’Insegna del Giglio. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Methods of Murder written by Elena M. Past and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first extended analysis of the relationship between Italian criminology and crime fiction in English, Methods of Murder examines works by major authors both popular, such as Gianrico Carofiglio, and canonical, such as Carlo Emilio Gadda. Many scholars have argued that detective fiction did not exist in Italy until 1929, and that the genre, which was considered largely Anglo-Saxon, was irrelevant on the Italian peninsula. By contrast, Past traces the roots of the twentieth-century literature and cinema of crime to two much earlier, diverging interpretations of the criminal: the bodiless figure of Cesare Beccaria’s Enlightenment-era On Crimes and Punishments, and the biological offender of Cesare Lombroso’s positivist Criminal Man. Through her examinations of these texts, Past demonstrates the links between literary, philosophical, and scientific constructions of the criminal, and provides the basis for an important reconceptualization of Italian crime fiction.

Download or read book Crime Scenes written by Anne Mullen and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2000 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection are based on papers given at a conference on detective fiction in European culture, held at the University of Exeter in September 1997. The range of topics covered is designed to show not only the presence and variety of narratives of detection across different European countries and their different media (although there is a predictable emphasis on the novel). It also illustrates the fertility of the genre, its openness to a spectrum of readings with different emphases, formal as well as thematic. Approaches to detective fiction have often tended to confine them-selves to 'symptomatic' interpretation, where details of the fictional world represented are used to diagnose a specific set of social preoccupations and priorities operative at the time of writing. Such approaches can yield valuable insights. Nonetheless there is a risk of limiting the value of the genre as a whole solely to its role as a mirror held up to society. In this perspective, issues of structure and style are sidelined, or, if addressed, are praised to the extent that they approach invisibility -- concision, spareness, realism are the qualities singled out for praise. The genre also gives much scope for formal innovation -- and indeed has often attracted already established 'mainstream' writers and filmmakers for just this reason. The eclectic diversity of the detective narratives considered in this volume reveal the malleability of the traditional constraints of the genre. The essays bear rich testimony to the value of considering the interplay of thematic and structural issues, even in the most apparently unselfconscious and popular (or populist) forms of narrative. The patterns of reassurance, the triumph of intellect and the ordered, rational world 'of old' are now challenged by the need to foreground the problems, ambiguities and uncertainties of the self and of society. The plurality of meanings and the antithetical imperatives explored in these detective narratives confirm that the most recent forms of the genre are not mere palimpsests of their 'golden age' precursors. The subversion of traditional expectations and the implementation of diverse stylistic devices take the genre beyond mere homage and pastiche. The role of the reader/spectator and critic in conferring meaning is a crucial one.
Download or read book Inquisition and Inquiry written by Anne Mullen and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2000 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the narrative form which figured prominently in Sciascia's literary production in the 1970s and 1980s, that is, inchiesta, the non-fiction investigative essay, based principally on Manzoni's Storia della colonna infame [The Column of Infamy]. In his inchieste Sciascia investigates episodes in history, from the time of the Inquisition through to his own contemporary times, where intolerance and injustice outmatch human weakness and fear. This study considers Sciascia's commingling of detective and investigative writing, and his attempts at historiography. One striking feature of his narrative technique is his reliance on literature to interpret the past.
Download or read book Italian Giallo in Film and Television written by Roberto Curti and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the release in 1929 of a popular book series with bright yellow covers, the Italian word giallo (yellow) has come to define a whole spectrum of mystery and detective fiction and films. Although most English speakers associate the term giallo with the violent and erotic thrillers popular in the 1960s and 1970s from directors like Mario Bava, Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci and others, the term encompasses a wide range of Italian media such as mysteries, thrillers and detective stories--even comedies and political pamphlets. As films like Blood and Black Lace (1964) and Deep Red (1975) have received international acclaim, giallo is a fluid and dynamic genre that has evolved throughout the decades. This book examines the many facets of the giallo genre --narrative, style, themes, and influences. It explores Italian films, made-for-TV films and miniseries from the dawn of sound cinema to the present, discussing their impact on society, culture and mores.

Download or read book Investigating Identities written by Marieke Krajenbrink and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating Identities: Questions of Identity in Contemporary International Crime Fiction is one of the relatively few books to date which adopts a comparative approach to the study of the genre. This collection of twenty essays by international scholars, examining crime fiction production from over a dozen countries, confirms that a comparative approach can both shed light on processes of adaptation and appropriation of the genre within specific national, regional or local contexts, and also uncover similarities between the works of authors from very different areas.Contributors explore discourse concerning national and historical memory, language, race, ethnicity, culture and gender, and examine how identity is affirmed and challenged in the crime genre today. They reveal a growing tendency towards hybridization and postmodern experimentation, and increasing engagement with philosophical enquiry into the epistemological dimensions of investigation. Throughout, the notion of stable identities is subject to scrutiny. While each essay in itself is a valuable addition to existing criticism on the genre, all the chapters mutually inform and complement each other in fascinating and often unexpected ways. This volume makes an important contribution to the growing field of crime fiction studies and to ongoing debates on questions of identity. It will therefore be of special interest to students and scholars of the crime genre, identity studies and comparative literature. It will also appeal to all who enjoy reading contemporary crime fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
